I have always been fascinated by sport, movement and nutrition, I realised the importance of this and how it has a massive impact on an individuals life. The worlds love for sport and constant awareness of diet and nutrition interested me as I could see there was room for improvements. Even at a young age I was aware of peoples needs and their goals in this area. Everybody wanted to be fitter, slimmer and better at sports. I asked myself why this must be?
I started Shotokan Karate, which is a Japanese martial art at the age of 6, with my father. He had been practicing Karate for many years and introduced me to this to help build discipline and confidence. I Completed 6 years of training and worked my way up the gradings getting better every year. A lot of the other boys that were the same level as me that were in my Karate class are now in the England team and compete all over the world. If only I had kept this up maybe I would of been at the same level as them today.
I then started playing football and other sports at school. I was a late starter to football so my skills and ability were behind the others but my body structure had developed early and I was a lot taller and broader than the other boys. Even to the point where it looked like I was playing with friends younger than me. This was my strength and I used it to my advantage which allowed me to play alongside some lads that are professional today.
Being bigger and stronger than the other boys I was asked to play rugby and compete in athletics. I then found I was better at shorter distance sprinting like 200 or 300 metres but was also good at long distances too like 1500 metres. I held the record for the fastest 300 metres sprint for my year group at the time and was on a recognition board which included David Beckham for the fastest 1500 metres.
Then at the age of 15 I started weight training with my father. We would go to a local health club which mainly included fixed machines and a couple free weights. I then began to learn about resistance training and the strength and power carry over to sport. I went to school everyday and then gym every night. As soon as I got out of school I couldn't wait till I was down the gym. I was learning and training myself everyday.
I then started boxing at the age of 16 with some friends from school. This made me realise how tough and challenging some sports can be. Boxing is something that I loved as it was that hard intense sport I was looking for. I teach boxing and kickboxing today and it’s a great fun workout! I have also been lucky enough to travel over to Thailand and take part in Muay Thai boxing.
I started my working career at the age of 17 in leisure centres, where I climbed the ladder to gym instructor, manager and personal trainer. I started teaching group exercise classes and built a reputation within the leisure industry. I became extremely good at working with people on a one to one level which allowed me to progress my business to a self employed Personal Trainer.
